Being Plastic
Look fake? Well she mostly is, and yes, that is a real live woman.

Surgery is dangerous. It would not be strange to think that using such a method for vain purposes is wrong or foolish. While this is a matter of personal opinion, the truth is that a lot of people attribute cosmetic surgery as making someone "fake." This girl actually aspires to a fake doll. I believe she even went as far as to get contacts to make her eyes seem almost dead.
This isn't the only instance of someone wanting to be like a barbie doll.
Sarah Burge as seen above also payed quite a bit in order to look like a barbie doll.
I find it interesting that some desire the beauty of a doll that doesn't even match up to normal human proportions.

I think you raise a really interesting point about the discrepancy between beauty ideals and what is actually physically attainable. This Huffington Post article emphasizes your argument, showing a the life-sized Barbie doll a high school student made to show her peers the dangerous beauty standards they constantly try to conform to. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/galia-slayen/the-scary-reality-of-a-re_b_845239.html. According to the article, "At 5'9" tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia. She likely would not menstruate." Barbie is seen as a role model for girls all over the world, and with such an unhealthy and dangerous body weight and size, her image can only cause damage to those who attempt to emulate her; be it through eating disorders or plastic surgery.
ReplyDeleteI too find it strange that women in our culture have made Barbie an icon of beauty, or an icon of perfection. Below is a link to a photo of a celebrity Heidi Montag, the photo shows a before and after photo of all her plastic surgeries. She complained after having her surgeries of not being able to feel her face. Its sad to think that anyone would go to such lengths to be beautiful. Putting her life and health at risk. The fact that our culture pressures woman to go to such lengths to be beautiful according to outrageous standards, such as Barbie, a plastic doll, is heartbreaking.
